Title of work - i hope it has the desired effect.
It is about colonial germ warfare and a smallpox infected hankie that was deliberately given to the Shawnee, mingo and delaware Indians surrounding Fort Pitt in western pennsylvannia. One of the men responsible said in his diary at the time '....i hope it will have the desire effect'.
There are connections between these men and some that came out on the first fleet here. It has been established through the diary of watkin Tench that samples of smallpox were brought here with the first fleet. countless aboriginal people died from smallpox here in the Eora/Sydney area and beyond. whole populations wiped out.
so this is an historical work about death
This project was borne out of the recent sudden death of my father, a handkerchief, some emotive words written by a sibling on his death and the traumatic aftermath of a death processed according to particular societal and cultural mores. Interested artists and Individuals are invited to create an artwork on a handkerchief (any handkerchief not necessarily a man's) based around death/grief/bereavement and return it to me by mid July 2011 for inclusion in a show in Melbourne in August, 2011
Please note that due to the subject matter of this project (death/grief) some of the images on this blog might be disturbing.
